For the UH football team, nothing can be sweeter than the roar of the crowd, a sea of red, and the spirit of their alma mater.
To keep the encouragement coming, a new competition between school organizations looks to increase football attendance throughout the coming season. The first home game against Tulane had an attendance of about 3,500.
The competition, sponsored by Houston financial firm, GLO CPAs, is putting Bauer College of Business organizations to the test.
They will face off to see who can bring the most family and friends to the six home games this season to encourage more attendance and school spirit.
The word-of-mouth tactic will enable Bauer students to help their individual organizations, such as the American Marketing Association.
"Each time they connect with someone about supporting their organization at the games, they have the opportunity to express what membership in their organization means to them," Tina Zulu, marketing consultant for GLO CPAs, said.
When scores are tabulated at the end of the competition, the organization with the highest attendance will receive a $5,000 gift from GLO CPAs for their scholarship fund.
Second- and third-place winners will receive a $3,000 and $1,000 gifts, respectively.
"Students can have a great social outing, support their classmates and earn significant financial support for its scholarship endowment fund," Zulu said.
An announcement will be made at the beginning of each football game with the number of people who attended from each organization.
"Hopefully, the first year results merit it in becoming an annual event," Zulu said.
In sponsoring the contest, GLO hopes to foster education and school spirit, Carl Glaw, Jr., founding partner of GLO CPAs and board member of the Bauer College, said.
"Education is the cornerstone to leadership," Glaw said. "Being a community partner with the UH college of business is the one way we can foster leadership early on.
"I want GLO CPAs' legacy to be education, the cornerstone of leadership, and service to our community through professional and charitable service," he said.
GLO CPAs is a local firm that offers accounting, tax, public and private audit and financial planning for individuals and businesses.
Bauer faculty has commended GLO CPAs for the success of its networking luncheons, which provide scholarships for Bauer students.
"The Bauer College of Business is focused on teaching and developing leadership. The student organizations are a great platform to learn these skills," Zulu said.
GLO will host a press conference to promote the funding of scholarships Sept. 20 at The Houston Club.

The next UH home game will be against Grambling State at 6 p.m. Saturday at Robertson Stadium.
